M.O.T.U.S. — Who we are?
Founded by 3 high school students in Toronto Canada, Motus is dedicated to diversifying the world’s sources of renewable energy. To do this we will use piezoelectric devices to harness vibrational energy from various types of natural disasters.
But why is the work that we are doing important?
Hundreds of earthquakes occur each day — whether they be minor or major. However, earthquakes actually release energy in the form of kinetic energy from the vibrations of the tectonic plates. Right now all of this energy is simply being used for destructing in the form of devastating earthquakes. We at Motus want to turn this bad situation a little bit better by harvesting this kinetic energy coming from earthquakes. The secret — piezoelectricity. As a quick summary, piezoelectricity comes from when pressure or stress is applied to a piezoelectric material. This stress creates an in-balance of charge in the materials which creates voltage which can eventually be converted into electrical energy. But now onto our company. If you are a bit confused about who we are, think of us as a sustainable techie. Our goal is to use innovative technologies to tackle the biggest problems affecting our world!
Here at Motus, we value quite a few things. In fact, our name can actually act as an acronym for everything that we value!
M. → Highly motivated.
The sky isn’t the limit! As a group of highly motivated individuals, we are constantly pushing the status quo and acting against conventional beliefs. We have a future in mind, and we will work tirelessly to create it. We pride ourselves on being ambitious with enthusiasm meaning that we get up every morning with energy, excitement, and gratitude for being able to work on solving hard problems that affect real people!
O. → Optimistic
Life gets hard sometimes. Working on an idea that is only said to be viable in the next 10–20 years isn’t always the most exciting; it’s filled with many roadblocks and stops along the way. However, we have some solutions to mitigate this:
- Radiate positivity. Look sometimes things don’t go according to plan. Actually, it’s more like a lot of times. However, the best way to learn from these failures is to do just that, look at it as a learning experience. Our goal is to stay positive about the work we do and the future we have in mind
- Figure it out. A lot of the things we work on at Motus don’t have answers. You’ll likely find that you’ll be pushed to figure things out on your own. This is because we value growth > the deliverables or output given to us. When people grow and learn, Motus can also grow and learn!
3. Be a Unicorn! Shhhh it’s okay if unicorns don’t actually exist in real life, our idea of what a unicorn is people who are ready to be changemakers and pioneers. To solve gigantic problems — we need to think 10x. We need to stand out like a unicorn in a room filled with horses. After all, as Steve Jobs once said, “Innovation separates the leaders from the followers.”
T. → Teamwork and togetherness.
We can’t solve large problems by ourselves. In fact, all throughout history, the largest problems in the world have been solved by collaboration and communication by many parties globally. Feedback is the most important thing, we want to know any problems so that we can fix them! Teamwork leads to growth and growth is one step closer to solving global problems
U. → Uniqueness.
We want people to be themselves. No B.S. Authenticity and uniqueness is the key to thinking different. If everyone was the same at Motus, we wouldn’t be able to make any progress. We value everyone’s opinions, ideas, and perspectives. Don’t be scared to bring them to the table. A great idea is a great idea, it doesn’t matter where it comes from.
S. → Sustainability.
As a renewable energy company, you’ve probably figured out that we put a great amount of effort into making sure that our future is environmentally sustainable. Along with creating new facts for renewable energy, we’ve put in place various measures to ensure that our carbon footprint is limited! We want to make sure that we treat our planet with respect! As much as our company is environmentally sustainable, we want the lives of our employees to also be sustainable and healthy. Mental health is very important to us. Our employees are what make Motus go and we want to be able to do whatever we can to support them.
